THE LOOSE ENDS - A GUIDE TO SHOE TYING
The local music scene has been through some tough times over the last few years - but as said by one of our greatest visionaries - tough times never last, only tough people last. Which brings us to…
The Loose Ends.
A true gumtree love story. It’s hard enough to keep a band going nowadays, let alone start a new one with the lack of venues, impending rent payments and the third wave constantly peering over our shoulders. It brings a smile to my face knowing that somewhere right now, in our beautiful nation, some garage psych band is absolutely destroying a practice space.
That band is The Loose Ends. Hailing from the almighty 021 (Cape Town) emerges a fresh sound - one nastier than you could imagine. Is anyone else’s heart beating fast? From interesting arrangements to crushing bass and vocals that sound almost inhuman, you must be asking yourself “How the actual hell will I be able to see them live?”
Well...
"I joined the band pretty late , so I’m not too sure on the exact details , but as far as I know the story goes like this. Kyle and Brad found each other over gumtree and started playing together, some time after that a mutual friend, Johnny Texx, introduced me to Kyle on a night out and said “Hey man, you should play with this guy“. So I did. And here we are haha".
You’ve played that 70’s fest before with Runaway Nuns, what was the highlight of that years fest?
"Man, it feels like a lifetime ago, so it’s hard to name one stand out thing, but overall it was definitely one of my favourite festival experiences, great atmosphere and well organized, in terms of acts I remember being particularly blown away by Mouse, Deadly Bites and Sextape , I think they went by Groucho back then.
What act are you most excited to see on this years lineup?
Without a doubt The Klubs.
Can we look forward to any new material this year?
Possibly, nothing’s been confirmed yet , but in the meantime we’re still writing.
What are some local and international influences for your sound? Tell us about that iconic SG bass.
Sho, we all come from an incredibly varied musical background, there are very few bands we all agree on in terms of influences for this band , but I think in some ways that’s our biggest strength. When you can’t agree on anything it forces you to come up with something new.
As for the SG, I love that thing. It was my first “proper” bass but it’s not the most versatile bass around, which is why I now primarily play on a squire Jazz bass. It’s changed hands so many times over the years between local bands, which is part of the reason I bought it. It feels like owning a piece of the local DIY music scene.
What part of the fest are you looking forward to most?
Playing, it’s been far too long.
What makes that 70’s fest so special to you?
The genuine sense of community.
Is there anything you’d like to share with the fans before the fest?
We’re playing an official warm up show with Sextape and The Holders the night before at Smoking Kills . Pull in !
This collection of noise, sweat and gees will definitely put you where you should be, at That 70's Fest!
Well there you have it, now that we can all tie our loose ends up, hopefully you won't Triiip at the fest...
See what I did there?
Cheers
Luke from Dystopia
