The South African Metal Music Awards- Part II
The official ceremony for the South African Metal Music
Awards is creeping up on us and the excitement is building up a whole lot. In
part I (also available on Dystopia) I gave a small summary of why the SAMMAS exist and why it
is somewhat of importance to support this organisation and all that it encompasses.
Being not only a fan, but also a servant of the community, I
believe that through enough support and recognition South Africa can truly deliver
some of the best talent in the bizz. In our little web of genres, we hold some
precious gems and they deserve every bit of recognition that the SAMMAS bestows
upon them.
This glamorous evening will go as most award ceremonies do:
The event officially starts at 20:00 where you can expect a
welcoming speech and some introductions and other formalities. It is then
followed by a performance from Jozi newcomers, Sunken State, and thereafter the
guest speaker. Naturally this might seem a little “meh”, but I trust that the
organizers know their crowd and won’t burden us with vigorous shit talking that
generates too much thinking power. After all, we are there to celebrate, not
think. All jokes aside, it will then move on to the winner announcements and
then the ceremony will be closed with a set by The Drift.
I am intrigued and thrilled to experience the 6th
edition of the SAMMAS and I honestly cannot wait to hear who the winners are. Although,
and yes, I’m that person, all the nominees are amazing and with a line up like
this, taking sides is not easy at all. But whether you’re neutral or picking
sides remember that the scene needs us, and together we shall succeed.
