Just Music announce new heavy imprint label named Mongrel Records- By Mia

“The quality of metal and heavy rock bands in South Africa is stronger than ever, yet most of these artists have enjoyed little or no support from labels.” – Charles Kühn (CEO, Just Music)
As you probably already know the heavier/underground scene hasn’t really received the support it needs to excel or flourish in South Africa. We’re not saying it hasn’t done well, because it sure has its moments, but it’s safe to say the scene deserves a little breakthrough especially considering the current state of live music in our beloved country. That being said, Just Music couldn’t have chosen a better time to announce their new label imprint, Mongrel Records, who promise to push heavier local music into the global market. Those involved will benefit from the full spectrum of their label services and naturally still maintain an independent A&R and artist development profile.

Warren Gibson is appointed Label Manager which benefits Mongrel Records considering his 20-year commitment (so far) to the scene and his success as a publicist for many local artists. Gibson is also considered a patriot of the scene because of his role in the development of local heavy music. He is also associated with various international artists and independent labels. Do not fear, Gibson will still be Managing Director of Plug however.
“It’s been a longtime dream of mine to have a label that can give the heavier South African and African bands the help and attention they need and deserve.” – Warren Gibson (label manager)
Naturally, the first band that Mongrel Records got on board was S.A.’s very own stoner sweethearts, Ruff Majik. These saucy sludgers have already sailed the seas and will surely be a great kick-starter for the label considering their previous hard work and the impeccable perseverance of their front-man, Johni Holiday. They will be releasing their upcoming album through Mongrel Records and it is safe to assume that it will be a massive success considering the band’s previous neck-breakers.  But let’s be real, anything Mr.Holiday touches turns to stoner/sludge/doom- gold.

“We’ll be working closely together with them throughout the coming months to bring you a brand- new album with exciting new sounds.” – Johni Holiday (vocals, Ruff Majik)
Dystopia is extremely pleased and excited that our dearest local scene will get the chance to flourish and get the opportunity to live up to its full potential. At the end of the day, we are but fans, and all we want to do is see our favourite bands spread their wings and fly. God luck and good speed to both Mongrel Records and Ruff Majik.
